Cultists and kidnappers creating tension in Ogoni areas of Rivers State have embraced the amnesty offered by the Rivers State Government.
Chairman of the Rivers State Amnesty Programme Committee, Mr Ken Chinda, said that the government would come up with empowerment programmes to productively engage the repentant cultists and kidnappers.
Speaking in Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area of the state, Mr Chinda said that the essence of the programme was to stop waste of lives in the state.
He pleaded with those that had renounced cultism not to go back, warning that if they were caught indulging in crime, the amnesty offered them would not protect them from the law since they are crimes committed after the proclamation of the amnesty on them.
The amnesty committee boss said that the government would not hesitate to go after any cultists that fail to key into the amnesty programme.
It will be recalled that the first attempt by the committee to make youths in the area embrace the exercise collapsed. Governor Nyesom Wike of the state had to offer the area a second chance to redress the criminal challenge in the area.
Eight AK 47 riffles, 445 rounds of ammunition, two G3 riffles were among weapons surrendered by the repentant brigands.
