A former vice-admiral, Samuel Olajide Afolayan, has been ordered by an Ilorin high court to pay N9 million to one Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi after he reportedly detained his cows unconstitutionally.
Vanguard reports that former navy chief had detained 42 cows belonging to the herdsman although the herdsman claimed the cows were 60.
Justice Adeyinka Sikiru Oyinloye gave the judgment on January 8 and also ordered the retired admiral to pay N500,000 for each day of default of the judgement debt.
Abdullahi had sought judgement over the detention of his cows which he described as “bizarre, unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional.”
He also called for the release of his cows and asked the respondent to tender an apology in two national dailies.
He claimed security guard attached to the former naval chief in Obo-Ile in Ekiti local government area of Kwara state pointed a gun at his son who was rearing the cows and seized them.
He said all attempts to get the cows failed and that he was asked to pay N5 million to get them back.
Afolayan in his defence claimed the cows were led into his farm and destroyed his cassava and maize farm worth N2.5 million.
He claimed Abdullahi burnt his cassava processing plant which was why he demanded the demanded the payment of the loss estimated at N15 million but was later reduced to N5 million after pleas.
Meanwhile, the Daily Sun is reporting that fresh attacks by suspected killer herdsmen has left at least three people dead and several others injured in Plateau state.
According to the report, the attack occurred on night of Friday, January 26 at Hukke village, in Maingo district of Bassa local government area of the central northern state.
New Arena gathered from the report that the attackers also burned down not fewer than 10 houses with foodstuff and valuable items worth millions of naira inside them.
